At the age of two, Domee Shi and her family immigrated from China to Canada. Her father, who was a professor of fine arts, introduced her to art. Inspired by her father and anime, Domee enrolled in Sheridan College to study animation.
Once she graduated she worked as an instructor for cartooning. After applying to Disney, Dreamworks, she eventually she landed a three month internship with Pixar on her second attempt.
At Pixar, she went from an intern to a storyboard artist who contributed to Inside Out, The Incredibles 2 and Toy Story 4, and a director.
Domee Shi became the first woman to direct a Pixar short. Her short, "Bao"won an Oscar in 2019, making Domee the first woman of color to win in this category.
In 2022, she did it again by becoming the first female solo director for her Pixar film, Turning Red. Both of her amazing Pixar projects were inspired by her own life growing up as a Chinese Canadian in Toronto.
Thank you so much Domee Shi for never giving up! Remember to always keep trying, if she can do it, you can too.
