The third person to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony (EGOT), the second woman to win an EGOT and the first woman to win an EGOT, the icon Rita Moreno.
Ms. Moreno has been acting, singing, and dancing on our screens for decades and she isn't showing any signs of slowing down. Born in 1931 as Rosa Dolores Alverio, nicknamed Rosita began dubbing American child actor's voices in Spanish. After her parents divorced, she changed her last name to Moreno.
When she made her debut on Broadway at age 13 and soon after, she was making her on screen debut in the film, So Young, So Bad, although in this film, she was credited as Rosita Moreno. Later, she would become professionally known as Rita Moreno.
Ms. Moreno continued to shine on screen by starring in various films like Singing in the Rain, The King and I and the movie that won her an Oscar, West Side Story. Despite all the success of West Side Story, she still was typecasted in stereotypical Latina roles, usually as a sex symbol.
However, it was her role as Anita in West Side Story, that inspired her to stand up for herself "What was important about Anita to me — and still is — is that Anita, believe it or not, was the only part I ever remember where I represented Hispanics in a dignified and positive way," she told NPR "It represented a lot of breakthroughs for young actors of Hispanic origin."
This led to Rita Moreno turning down roles, that she felt that were offensive. She stopped making movies for 7 years. While she wasn't making movies, she worked on stage and took on guests roles on tv. Eventually, she would start starring in movies again. As today, she is starring in 80 for Brady along side Jane Fonda, Sally Field and Lilly Tomlin.
Thank you GlossBoss Rita Moreno for fighting for representation in TV and film. Remember if she can do it, you can too!💋
